Dr. DeMers is Professor Emeritus of Geography at New Mexico State University specializing in Geographic Information Science, Geographic Education, and Landscape Ecology. DeMers is the 2010 winner of the Anderson Medal of Honor in Applied Geography, the highest award given by the Applied Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).  A Past President of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE), he also holds positions as GIS Section Editor of Geography Compass, Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Applied Geospatial Researchand The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research, Chair of the Anderson Medal Selection Committee (AAG), and Alliance Coordinator of the New Mexico Geographic Alliance. He has published over seventy-five research articles and six texts on geographic information systems (GIS), two of which have been translated into Russian, Simple Chinese, and Arabic.  His most well-known GIS book is GIS for Dummies.  DeMers’ current applied research focuses on GIS institutional design, GIS for water resources analysis, and species range expansion models.  His theoretical research includes big data analysis and data mining, geospatial thinking, geospatial information theory, heutagogy in GIS education, and serious geogames for learning.
