Q: How do I apply to the geography graduate program at NMSU

Q: When is the application deadline?
A: The application deadline is January 15 of each year.

Q: Can I apply for spring admission?
A: We currently only consider applicants for fall admission.

Q: Is a GRE score required for the application?
A: No, a GRE score is not currently required.

Q: What are the prerequisites for admission in terms of previous course work?
A: A degree in Geography or a related field is encouraged, but not required. If admitted without a geography degree, the GES Graduate Director and your advisor will assess you transcripts and determine which courses are deficiencies and need to be taken in addition to the regular graduate class requirements.

Q: What do I need to do to get a recommendation from my professor or others?
A: The answer to this question depends on who you ask to give you a reference. However, if you follow these guidelines, you should be successful.

Q: Given my background, would you encourage me to apply to your program?
A: We do not make eligibility recommendations prior to the submission of the graduate program application.

Q: Should I contact a potential research advisor before applying?
A: You may want to contact a member of our faculty who has research expertise in the area you wish to study before applying. If you do so, it is strongly encouraged for you to review carefully the faculty member’s research works and be specific as to why you believe that they would be a good fit to advise you when you reach out to them. Q: I am an international student applicant. Where can I go for more information?
A: NMSU’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services has a wealth of information available on their website and in a FAQs page here.

Q: Can the non-refundable application fee be waived?
A: Currently, the NMSU Grad School does not charge a fee for the first graduate application in a year.

Q: I am an international applicant from an English-speaking country and my undergraduate education was conducted in English. Do I need to produce a TOEFL or English Language Proficiency Test?
A: Not necessarily. See here for details on whether you qualify for an English Proficiency Waiver.

Q: I am an international applicant. Do I need to submit a transcript evaluation?
A: Beginning for the 2024-2025 cycle, a transcript evaluation is required. All evaluations must be performed by a recognized member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

Q: My transcript is in a language other than English. Do I need to submit a translated transcript?
A: Yes. See more information here. On the other hand, if your transcript is already in English, you do not need to submit a translation.
