Dr. Chao Fan
Dr. Chao Fan is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at New Mexico State University. She received her Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University. Before joining NMSU, she was a postdoctoral fellow with the Field Museum and an Assistant Professor with the University of Idaho.
She is a broadly trained researcher and educator in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIS&T). Her research focuses on the development and application of geospatial tools to address urban and environmental problems such as climate change, urban heat island, urban greening, and infectious disease. She is also interested in studying the impacts of extreme weather events on power system analysis and planning. She has worked on research funded by the National Science Foundation, US Department of Agriculture, and US Department of Energy. Her research outcome is published in prominent outlets such as Global Change Biology, Landscape and Urban Planning, and Annals of the Association of American Geographers.
Her teaching interests focus on the principle and applications of GIS&T. She has taught a variety of GIS courses including Fundamentals of GIS, Intermediate GIS, Programming for GIS, and Spatial Analysis and Modeling.
